Dr. Wilsun Xu is currently a Senior NSERC/iCORE Industrial Research Chair Professor in this Department. He received a B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from the Xian Jiaotong University of China in 1982, a M.Sc in Power Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1985, and a PhD in Power Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1989. After spending 7 years in Canadian power industry with increasing responsibilities, Dr. Xu joined the University of Alberta in September 1996. Since then, he has been operating an active research program in the areas of power quality, voltage stability and distribution systems.
Developing innovative solutions to real and challenging engineering problems is one of the main characteristics of Dr. Xu's research. His research contributions have been widely accepted by industry and academia. Dr. Xu serves frequently as a panelist, seminar speaker and session chair in IEEE conferences, and as an expert consultant for industry. He is currently a member of several committees of the IEEE Power Engineering Society and other institutions, including serving as the power quality editor for the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery.
Dr. Xu has active collaborations with industry, government agencies and universities. His current research programs are supported by various sources. As a registered professional engineer, Dr. Xu is a strong supporter of local engineer communities. He has organized or supported several continuing education activities in collaboration with industry and the local IEEE section in the past.
Dr. Xu's current main research interests are a) power quality and its applications to power signaling and information extraction and b) advanced power distribution systems including load management. He welcomes highly motivated and ambitious researchers and graduate students to join his team for a rewarding research adventure.
